After several trips to the Middle East, the artist produced several paintings highlighting Arab and Muslim cultures. Some critics felt that these works were indulging in cultural and social stereotypes. However, the paintings in this series are extremely valuable and appreciated today.
He personified Truth in art in the form of a nude woman who is either thrown into an empty well, standing at the bottom or emerging from it. Some art critics believe that these paintings reflect Gérôme’s violent and malicious criticism of the Impressionists.
