Monet and the Japanese garden
Fascinated by botany, Monet bought and laid out a lush garden in Giverny. He lived there for 43 years. He wanted a landscape with a variety of motifs and planted fruit trees, ornamental trees and flowers of all kinds, including many exotic species.
The garden was crossed by a stream that flows into the Epte, a tributary of the Seine. Monet created an artificial lake on this watery corner, over which he built an arched bridge. Fascinated by Japanese culture, he designed this bridge with garlands of flowers.
The locals are horrified by the eccentric painter’s passion and fear that the water lilies in his lake will poison the water with which they water their animals.
Monet would never give up his plants, and he constantly added exotic specimens to his collection. This would be his source of inspiration for more than 30 years
He gave four of his water lilies to the French state following the armistice of 11 November 1918 as a symbol of peace. The paintings were exhibited at the Musรฉe d’Orsay in Paris, which opened a few months after his death.
