Le Chat Noir was founded by Rodolphe Salis with a group of progressive writers as a reaction to the populist and censored cafรฉ-concerts of the 19th century.
Admission to the cabaret was more expensive than other venues of the time, but it offered intellectually provocative performances.
The venue’s name comes from a black cat that Salis found nearby while working.
Steinlen’s poster was created as an advertisement for the shows the cabaret hosted and quickly became a symbol of late 19th-century prints and entertainment.
