In addition to paintings, he’s done sets and costumes for plays.
Along with other Impressionist painters – Vasili Kandinsky, Alfred Kubin and Franz Marc – founded the artistic group Der Blaue Reiter (“The Blue Rider”).
His paintings usually distort colour and form and focus on expressing feelings and moods rather than reproducing objective reality.
Macke was short-lived. He died aged just 27 in the First World War on a battlefront in France.
