He is one of the most famous German impressionist painters.
He lived in a particularly innovative period for German art: he witnessed the development of the main expressionist movements as well as the development of the European avant-garde movements.
He travelled to Paris, where he saw the paintings of the French Impressionists, who fascinated and deeply influenced him.
He integrated elements of the avant-garde into his paintings which interested him most. He used a combination of simplified forms and vibrant colours to produce portraits and figurative scenes.
He had a short career. He died aged just 27 on a battlefront in France during the First World War.
