Did you know that…?
Little Red Riding Hood is an ancient tale that was first collected and written by Charles Perrault in the 17th century
A 2013 study shows that the oral version of the story originated in the Middle East as far back as the 1st century.
In the past, the story was interpreted as a rite of passage from puberty to adulthood.
Some very old versions are downright gruesome. In one of these, Little Red Riding Hood eats her grandmother.
Even Perrault’s version is pessimistic: the story ends when Little Red Riding Hood is eaten by a wolf. It is only in the 19th century that the Brothers Grimm provide the happy ending characteristic of fairy tales.
