Name Batlló House means House of bones and comes from the fact that the details of the façade suggest bone shapes. These are supposed to be the bones of the victims of the dragon that St George defeated.
Josep Batlló, the businessman who bought the building in 1903, intended to demolish it and build a new house. But Gaudí convinced him that this was not necessary, rethought its design and redesigned it in his unmistakable Art Nouveau style.
The façade of the Batlló House features a type of decoration made from pieces of broken glass assembled into a mosaic, a process called trencadís This was one of the architect’s favourite techniques because of its sustainability and aesthetic value.
