Have you ever wondered what inspires artists to create in their own unique style and what made them approach a particular stream of art?
If you’re passionate about art or just want a challenge worthy of a puzzle enthusiast, then a 1000 piece puzzle depicting James Tissot’s painting, A Convalescent, may be the right choice
This art puzzle depicts one of James Tissot’s paintings from his time living in England as a political refugee following the Franco-Prussian War. A prolific period during which he created numerous oil paintings on canvas, surprising his admirers with his realistic snapshots depicting the lavish life of Victorian British nobility.
His detailed scenes are most impressive for the accuracy with which he manages to capture them, as in a photograph, even in the absence of an attractive colour palette, such as this faded tomnathic landscape
A Convalescent was painted in 1876, when Tissot met his beloved muse, Kathleen Newton, who also became his life partner and with whom he withdrew from the sumptuous social life and formed a small circle of intimates.
Like most paintings that depict, down to the smallest detail, scenes from the lives of aristocrats, in this puzzle painting you can see the finesse of detail as you reconstruct the whole picture piece by piece. From facial expressions to posture and gestures, every aspect is painstakingly reproduced to reflect reality

Did you know that…?
The painting A Convalescent is one of Tissot’s last paintings in which he did not have Kathleen Newton as his muse, whom he first painted in late 1876, inspiring him in almost all of his subsequent creations
After the death of his muse in 1882, James Tissot became very interested in spiritualism – even trying to connect with the spirit of his beloved, an interest that was reflected in his later creations
His creations thus increasingly depicted religious scenes, replacing images of high society ladies. A telling example, full of deep emotion, is his What our Saviour saw from the Cross, in which he masterfully translates his own pain onto the faces of his characters.
But in order to keep his work as true to reality as possible, James Tissot left England behind and travelled to the Middle East to study and reproduce as faithfully as possible the specific features of the people of the place.
