Who was Pierre-Auguste Renoir?
Renoir was an atypical Impressionist painter because in his works he also dealt with figurative art and portraits, unlike other Impressionists who focused more on subjects from nature.
He came from a modest family and because of poverty missed the chance to become a singer.
He admired the musician Richard Wagner and painted a memorable picture of him in about 35 minutes.
In his youth, he spent many hours at the Louvre copying the works of famous artists. As an adult, his works were exhibited at the museum he loved so much.
His son, the film director Jean Renoir, donated many of the painter’s works, but also sold some of them to finance film projects early in his career.
He suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, but that didn’t stop him painting. In the latter part of his life, he tied his brush to his disobedient hand and continued to paint small paintings.
