Nevertheless, the superb Art Nouveau architecture manages to catch the eye even beyond the crumbling walls and invites the viewer to imagine the splendour that the Casino building once knew and will know again after extensive renovation.
Built between 1904 and 1910 on the initiative of King Charles I, it was originally designed in a combination of Romanian architectural styles, but the design was changed after work began to bring it into line with the style of other casinos in Europe, which displayed extravagance in detail, commanded respect and invited elegance in dress.
