Vincent Van Gogh – a great artist marked by a tragic fate
Van Gogh did not experience fame during his lifetime. But he lived to paint and left behind a fantastic artistic legacy.
He is said to have suffered from hypergraphia – a disease that makes you write continuously – and this would explain the sheer volume of work he produced in such a short lifetime: over 2,000 works of art, some 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches.
He fed the poor, self-mutilated by cutting off his earlobe and shot himself at 37.
He had major self-esteem issues. He considered himself untalented and thought all his work a failure
It seems that during his lifetime he sold only one painting – “The Red Vineyard”, for just 400 francs. By way of comparison, in 1990 his painting, Portrait of Dr. Gachet sold for a fabulous $82.5 million.
Van Gogh and the Sunflower: 3 things you didn’t know
- The artist knew that his sunflower paintings were special, but his desire to be associated with them was only fulfilled after his death. At his funeral, all the people brought him sunflowers as a last tribute, and this flower later became synonymous with his name.
- There are 5 sunflower paintings in the vase, all of which are housed in museums around the world, from Amsterdam to Tokyo. It seems that the painter may have actually painted 7 paintings, one of which was lost during World War II, and one is owned by an anonymous person.
- In painting Sunflowers the artist was in fact experimenting with colour, one of which was chrome yellow. Van Gogh experimented with increasingly extreme colour contrasts. At the time it was not known that under the influence of ultraviolet rays this colour would darken. This is why many of his paintings have a darker tint even though they should have been golden.
